When man lived in caves, he was under constant threat of outward dangers like attack by wild animals and at times men from other groups who wished to occupy their territory, food and residence. The principle was that the “strongest would prevail”. There were no such self defense weapons as we see now all around us.

Gradually, with the growth of civilization and sense of self-protection and rights an liberty dawning on human beings, search for weapons to thwart the attacks started. In result, several inventions were made. In the earlier days, besides swords, pierces, bow and arrow, several non-traditional weapons were invented and put to use. The throwing star is a potent example, mostly used by Japanese and Chinese warriors.

In the modern ages people started recognizing the use of non-lethal weapons for self defense instead of lethal weapons like guns. With the advent of the theories of democracy and socialism the use of such weapons like pepper shot ½ oz became preferred compared to the use of swords, knives and other such weapons, the use of which could cause loss of life.

In the modern days, self defense also includes defense of others. Inventors are coming up with new self defense products every day. In the process we already have most effective weapons like the mace pepper spray and various other tools like the stun guns, the alarm and flash devices and many others. People are now looking forward to the days of beam devices as we saw in the famous movie like Star Trek.
